Saving Timeless Stories and Sharing Dreams:
Spring at Augusta Savage Gallery

Continuing its celebration of its 30th anniversary, Augusta Savage Gallery both looks forward and celebrates the past. February 12 through March 9, the Gallery looks to the future with Dreaming: Prophesies, Speculations, and Good Guesses, a group exhibit by a host of artists new to the gallery. Each artist has submitted one work accompanied by text ranging from one to one hundred words. The works provide a visionary gaze into the future of our society -- be they social, political or interpersonal hopes or fears of what lies ahead. Young and old, professional and amateur, formally trained and self-taught, the artists dream ... and share their vision.

And Augusta Savage Gallery celebrates the past when it presents Native American Hoop Dancing by Cliff Matias at 7pm on March 6. Matias, whose background is Taino and Cherokee, is an award-winning traditional Native American dancer as well as a traditional singer, accomplished flute player, and a storyteller. In performance, Matias dances to the beat of a traditional song while creating the shapes of the many endangered animals of the world, including the eagle, turtle, buffalo, alligator, snake, hawk, and Mother Earth. When he throws his hoops and they return to him, they tell the story that life is metaphorically a continuous circle, where all we do comes back to us.
