In addition to having a worldwide reputation as a jazz pianist and educator, Dr. Billy Taylor also has some strong local connections. As a University of Massachusetts alumnus, faculty member, and Fine Arts Center artist-in-residence, he has had many experiences with residencies. Taylor knows the impact that such activities can have on young people. "I've done lots of residencies myself, and I know what it's like for students to hear from artists whose personal insights are simple, understandable, and powerful," said Dr. Taylor. "Artists are natural teachers."

Because of this belief, Dr. Taylor instituted the Billy Taylor Endowment for Jazz Residencies. This fund supports an annual residency by an emerging jazz artist. It provides the opportunity for these artists to perform and share their experiences in the field with students outside a traditional classroom environment. "It's important for students to interact with artists, especially young artists who are emerging but already contributing to the field."

The Billy Taylor Jazz Residency began in spring 1999 with the talents of jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon. This past year included the special talents of jazz violinist Regina Carter. This year from February 6 -- February 8, vibraphonist Stefon Harris will continue this tradition.

Heralded by The Los Angeles Times as "one of the most important young artists in jazz" Stefon Harris is unquestionably developing what will be a long and vibrant career. Harris' passionate artistry, energetic stage presence, and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him into the forefront of the current jazz scene. Widely recognized and lauded by both his peers and jazz critics, the 26-year-old is committed to both exploring the rich potential of jazz composition and blazing new trails on the vibraphone.

Harris' residency includes visits to area high schools as well as the Music Department at UMass. Be sure to listen to WMUA (or stop by) at 10AM Wednesday, February 7 for a live interview broadcast from the Fine Arts Center's lobby. Stefon Harris will perform Thursday, February 8 at 7:30pm in Bowker Auditorium. Tickets are $20, $15; 17 and under are $10; and Five College Students are just $7 and $5. Call the Box Office at 545-2511 or 1-800-999-UMAS.
