The Fine Arts Center Celebrates Amherst\222s 250th Birthday with a Free Lit Series

It's a month-long party dedicated to Amherst's rich literary history. In celebration of Amherst's 250th Anniversary, the Fine Arts Center is collaborating with the UMass MFA Program for Poets and Writers, and the Juniper Literary Festival to present a month-long series of readings, a journal and press fair, and a literary scavenger hunt for families -- and it's all free.

The series gets started April 1 through the 30th with a Literary Scavenger Hunt for families with young children throughout downtown Amherst. Families can start anywhere and there's a small prize awarded at each location if the clue is solved. For participating businesses, clues and a map visit http://www.fineartscenter.com/amherstlit.

On Thursday, April 2 at 7PM at Wünderarts Gallery in Amherst, there will be a New Writers Reading where the public can hear some of our local, young award-winning authors read from their new books. Featured will be Chris Bachelder, Elizabeth Hughey, Jedediah Berry, and Lisa Olstein. Refreshments are generously provided by Portabella Catering.

Still to come: a reading by local luminary author Martin Espada and an Independent Journal and Book Fair. For a complete schedule, visit fineartscenter.com/amherstlit.

Magic Triangle Series: Three Things to Say
Terry Jenoure, Billy Bang, Charles Burnham pay tribute to Leroy Jenkins

Three master improvising violinists pay homage to the most important violinist to emerge in the post-Coltrane era: the late Leroy Jenkins. A veteran of the bands of John Carter, Archie Shepp, Henry Threadgill and others, Bronx-born Terry Jenoure is a wide-ranging visual and performing artist, and curator of the Fine Arts Center's Augusta Savage Gallery. "From Billy Bang's violin comes everything we know about black music and a lot we have yet to learn about rhythm, subtlety and swing," writes Ntozake Shange. The passion and fire of Charles Burnham has graced the work of Cassandra Wilson, James Blood Ulmer, Steven Bernstein and Medeski, Martin & Wood.

The Magic Triangle Jazz Series continues with the Ganelin Trio Priority (April 28). Tickets are $12/general public and $7/students and are available through the Fine Arts Center Box Office, 1-800-999-UMAS.

"In Whose Voice?" at the University Gallery
Tracking Shifts in the Art World

"In Whose Voice?" focuses on the increasingly significant shift that is occurring away from the didactic model of curating towards a more inclusive model. This panel will examine the (multi-)cultural, interdisciplinary, contextual challenges museums face in order to appropriately exhibit works of art and to create a platform for genuine dialogue between the artist and the curator, and between the curator and other cultures.

Our distinguished panelists Matthew Higgs (director of White Columns, artist, critic and writer), Susan Vogel (Columbia University, African art expert, film maker), and Hamza Walker (Renaissance Society, award winning curator and writer) will examine the (multi-)cultural, interdisciplinary, contextual challenges museums face in order to appropriately exhibit works of art and to create a platform for genuine dialogue between the artist and the curator, and between the curator and other cultures.

"In Whose Voice?" will be conducted at the Fine Arts Center Rand Theater on Tuesday, March 31 at 4:30 P.M. Refreshments will follow at the University Gallery.
