| Spotlight -- 2/19/09 -- Fine Arts Center > Tango sensation hits UMass Fine Arts Center Concert Hall |
Tango sensation hits UMass Fine Arts Center Concert Hall Forever Tango, an evening of tango music and dance has played to great acclaim the world over and just recently enjoyed its third run on Broadway. There is the dance itself: steamy in its sexuality, legs entwined, eyes engaged, hands caressing necks, legs, backs. The complicated, tricky steps of the tango demand from the lead a movement of command, from his partner a response of alert and receptive obediance. The very form of the dance, then, incorporates roles of dominance and submission, reflecting both sexual and non-sexual aspects of relationships. In addition to the dancers, Forever Tango includes an eleven-piece band that plays throughout the show, displaying virtuoso musicianship on the piano, the violin, and the bandonen. Forever Tango is sure to warm you up!
For ticketing information, call the FAC box office at 545-2511, 800-999-UMAS or online at www.fineartscenter.com.
Please join us on Tuesday, February 24 for free Argentine Tango Lesson and fun Milonga (tango dance) with local tango teachers Jackie Jackie Wong and Brandon Shaw. Learn the Latin dance that has become synonymous with mystery and passion. No partner is necessary. Just bring yourself and a sense of adventure. PERFECT for beginners! We'll gather in the lobby of the Concert Hall from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. | The U.S. Army Blues Bring Big-Band Jazz to the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall A component of The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own," the Army Blues is one of the few remaining professional big bands working today. Over the years it has evolved into the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Army. In keeping with the tradition of America's only original art form, jazz, this 18-piece ensemble strives to preserve the music of such big band legends as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, and Stan Kenton.
This event is part of the annual high school jazz festival that is presented by the UMass Fine Arts Center in collaboration with the UMass Music Department. Several Army Blues band members will lead clinics for the high school jazz festival throughout the day. The festival culminates with a competition and the winning band will perform on the Concert Hall stage as on opener for the U.S. Army Blues. Please join us at 7:25pm to hear these talented young students followed by the U.S. Army Blues at 8pm.
