Exploring a New View of Classical Music
Red Priest Baroque Ensemble

Throughout the 2001-02 season, the Center Series explores new ways of approaching and exploring classical music through the artistry of a variety of ensembles. During October, there will be two chamber ensembles in residence, the Kronos Quartet and the Red Priest Baroque Ensemble, each with a unique voice in their approach to traditional chamber music.

The Red Priest Baroque Ensemble takes traditional, baroque music and presents it in a visually distinct and challenging way. Through the residency activities scheduled for each ensemble, these performers will interact with many members of our community sharing their unique joy and artistry. We hope that you will join us!

Gramophone magazine has hailed Red Priest as "The UK's most dynamic theatrical and outrageously different baroque ensemble." Formed in 1997, they present no-holds-barred performances of music from the 16th-18th centuries. Named for Vivaldi, who was called the Red Priest of Venice for his fiery red hair, they will perform a program titled "Priest On The Run." They perform a public concert on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Bowker Auditorium with a program that features the music of Bach, Telemann and, of course, Vivaldi.

What the critics are saying: "For people who "appreciate" classical music but have a little secret - it bores them - the answer is Red Priest". (WASHINGTON POST) "The effect is like crossing a Wigmore Hall recital with a Guinness-soaked session in an Irish bar. Highly competent and infectiously different." (CLASSIC CD) "Red Priest has the fire, technical ability and sheer daring to bring it off. brilliant and inspired musicianship." (THE GRAMOPHONE); "Faint hearts should prepare themselves." (BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE).

As part of the Thomas F. Parker Young Artist Community Residency, the ensemble will speak with students in a music history class, perform for, and talk with music students about their unique approach. They will also share their insights with students in a European History class, present a performance/demonstration for students in the Lively Arts class, as well as offer presentations in local schools.

For more information on the residency activities, please contact Halina Kusleika, Assistant Director of Programming, at (413) 545-0190.
