February 2006 Events > Helikon Opera in Die Fledermaus
Helikon Opera in Die Fledermaus
By Johann Strauss

Considered by many to be the greatest of all Austrian operettas, Die Fledermaus (The Bat) will delight audiences with its waltzes, arias and bubbling exuberance. Mistaken identities, flirtations at a masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all kinds provide a hilarious vehicle for some of the most captivating music ever written. Based in Moscow, the Helikon Opera has established an international reputation for staging dazzling productions of classic and modern operas. Helikon’s distinctive identity is founded in a passionate commitment to superior acting and vocal excellence. "…the Helikon Opera will blow you away." --Le Parisien Liberer

Nomad: The River by Yin Mei Dance
Co-presented with New WORLD Theater

Yin Mei is a child of China's Cultural Revolution period and with this performance she uncovers her feelings and her own haunting experiences during the political hysteria of that time. Her luminous quartet of dancers moves in and out of focus; mysterious, dreamlike moments are terrifyingly interrupted; visions appear and dissolve evoking recurring dreams and memories. Through an extraordinary collaboration with lighting designer Ling Xiao and visual and sound designer Chris Salter, Yin Mei poetically conjures the impact of memory, history, and cultural traditions on the journey of life. Educational Outreach: February 23 Master classes at Mt. Holyoke College and in other locations. Supported in part by the Five College Dance Department
