Hi this is Johnny Memphis, music director for 93.9 The River.
If you think I’m going to tell you about the great music on our station, you’re right. Rolling Stone magazine named us one of the ten best stations in the country and a big reason for that is our unique music mix. When we say, “93.9 The River—Progressive Radio,” we mean it. Our musical philosophy is that there are two kinds of music — good and not so good. Most people really enjoy a little musical variety as long as you do it right. If you check their CD collection they may concentrate on Rock & Roll, but there will also be a little Jazz, Folk, Reggae.
So along with the bread and butter Rock & Roll for our demographic - Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Paul Simon - and other baby boomer legends, we mix in great Blues, Jazz, Folk, Soul, Oldies, Modern Rock, World Music, and Local Heroes that all fit in with and complement our core artists. When you do this consistently and well, there is a vast ocean of great music that we can dip into to make our station sound fresh and exciting. We mix in great things you’ve never heard before, with old favorites that haven’t been played into the ground. We are always freshening up the library and discovering great new artists. I get a huge number of calls and e-mails asking for information about, say, “that song you played at 3 o’clock that had this great guitar and a guy singing about this woman and the only words I remember are, ‘you’ve gone away,’ I just have to know what it was.” We are playing music that is making a strong connection with our listeners.
It takes good DJs to make this format work and we have them. They know music and they love music and it comes through when they talk about it. On the weekends we have great specialty shows: Alt-Country / Americana / Roots with Jim Olson on The Backporch and an amalgam of different musical styles with The Jazz Farmer - both produced in-house. We also air The Putumayo World Music Hour, Acoustic Café, and E-Town.
So tune into 93.9 The River and enjoy some great music that you already know, and some great music that we want to turn you on to. Thanks for listening!
