Dear Readers,

Asian Dance & Music to Take Spring Hiatus
Time to Think and Reflect Upon its Success

For eight years now the Asian Dance and Music Program has been working at an incredibly high level of activity in creating, producing and bringing the best and varied selection of Asian arts, culture, and educational events to the Valley.

As the Master has said: "A craftsman, if he means to do good work, must pause to sharpen his tools" (Analects, Confucius, Book 15). Now it is time to pause, to take a break in the coming spring from staging events, and to give us a moment to reflect upon our work. We will also be working to develop thoughts and ideas for new ventures and new partnerships for the future. We are fortunate that we have the opportunity to do this.

We will not be off the "Arts" radar screen completely, however. In April, we will co-present a film and lecture on Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, the pioneers of modern dance in America with the Multicultural Department and the Department of Film Studies for their annual film festival. Norton Owen, the official archivist at Jacob's Pillow will introduce the film, speaking about the artists whose work was heavily influenced by Asian Dance styles. Ranjanaa and the Nataraj Dancers will be presenting the company's repertoire in India and the west coast.

Meantime, back in the office we will be drawing up survey and assessment plans for the program and planning our upcoming 10th Anniversary celebration. We invite you to keep track of our activities by checking out our web page or by calling us. We would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions as always.

See you in the fall!

- Ranjanaa Devi, Director, Asian Dance & Music Program
