Our theater has become a rare intercultural meeting place in an area characterized by visible social divisions of class and race. We purposely exist at the intersection of art and politics, scholarship and activism, professional work and community life. In our work, we promote cultural equity and the vision of a "new world" - one that embraces diverse cultural backgrounds, multiple artistic disciplines, widespread geographical roots, and commitment to justice. A resident program of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, NWT has redefined the role of the arts in higher learning, expanded partnerships between professional artists and communities, and extended the frontiers of performance aesthetics and socially involved theater. We have made arts-based grassroots organizing and creative collaborations with communities of color an integral part of our mission. |
