ABOUT NEW WORKS FOR A NEW WORLD SUMMER PLAYLAB
In 1996, New WORLD Theater launched NW2, a major regional theater initiative.
Founded to develop new plays by artists of color, New Works for a New WORLD is a multifaceted play laboratory produced by New WORLD Theater. It was launched in 1996 as a major regional theater initiative, in partnership with the New England Foundation for the Arts. One of the major goals of the project is to identify and develop new works by playwrights of color through active solicitation and commissioning. Over the years, our innovative artistic program has expanded this unique audience base, drawing in traditional and non-traditional theatergoers.
The New Works for a New WORLD play lab is designed to assist in the development of theater works by established and emerging performing artists and writers. Rather than limit its scope to a single approach or genre, the playlab accommodates the myriad creative styles and unique perspectives of artists of color by engaging interdisciplinary work, collective artistic groups, solo performance and various approaches to play-making.
Each year the Summer Playlab features an extraordinary group of talented and nationally recognized artists. Some of the artists we have presented include Laurie Carlos and Bau Graves; Marlies Yearby; poets Sekou Sundiata and Suheir Hammad; performers Rha Goddess, Rokafella and Kwikstep; playwrights Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas and Alice Tuan; and performers Mildred Ruiz and Steven Sapp. The Playlab takes place each June and July on the campus of AMHERST COLLEGE.
