PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
at New WORLD Theater

Summer 2008

New Works for a New WORLD , a summer professional development laboratory dedicated to exploring new aesthetics and working methods by
artists of color, is currently seeking interns to join our production and development team. Interns will participate in the process of developing new theater works by contemporary theater artists and the highly acclaimed Project 2050 Youth Arts Retreat.

Our internship program provides an exciting opportunity in theater production for students to gain hands-on experience in several areas of theater including, but not limited to: electrics, stage management, front-of-house, sound, publicity, light carpentry and general residency support. The goal is to provide students with a wide range of production experiences that will enhance their options as theater practitioners. All of our interns rotate production assignments on a weekly basis, however intern preferences and skill levels are taken into account when responsibilities are assigned. Because of the unique nature of our internship program, students leave the summer with a deeper knowledge of how theater works and what it takes to succeed in the business. Our internship program has prepared our interns to work at other nationally recognized theaters including Shakespeare Theater (Washington, DC), Trinity Repertory Theater (Providence, RI) Freedom Theater (Philadelphia, PA) and Actors Theater of Louisville (Kentucky).

This hands-on production internship may be of special interest to those seeking an intensive experience in the process of producing new and original work, the intersection of interdisciplinary art forms, multicultural theater, lighting and/or stage management. Interns have particularly benefited from the ample opportunities to work alongside an extraordinary group of talented and nationally recognized artists. Some of the artists we have recently worked with are directors Laurie Carlos, Bau Graves and Lenora Pace; poets Sekou Sundiata, Lenelle Moise, Suheir Hammad and Willie Perdomo; performance artists Dawn Akemi Saito, Grisha Coleman, and Rha Goddess; playwrights Jorge Ignacio Cortiñas and Alice Tuan; performance ensembles Universes and I Was Born With 2 Tongues, composers Richard Harper, Nioka Workman and Paul Thompson and Choreographers Marlies Yearby, Rokafella and Kwikstep.

ABOUT NEW WORLD THEATER

Founded in 1979, New WORLD Theater has become a regional arts leader, earning a national and international reputation as a visionary cultural institution dedicated developing and presenting works by artists of color.   Our mission is to produce and present, in formal and community settings, high-quality theater that serves to educate, enliven, and empower a diverse, broad-based audience and to foster a creative network of professional and community participants. A resident program of the Fine Arts Center of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, New WORLD Theater has redefined the role of the arts in higher learning and expanded partnerships between professional artists and communities.

ABOUT New Works for a New WORLD and Project 2050

In 1996, New WORLD Theater launched New Works for a New WORLD , a major regional theater initiative, in partnership with the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. One of the major goals of this project is to identify and develop new works by playwrights of color by active solicitation and commissioning. Over the years, our innovative artistic program has expanded our unique audience base, drawing in traditional and non-traditional theatergoers.

Project 2050 is a multi-year collaboration between Western Massachusetts youth communities and professional artists, activists, and scholars that seeks creative ways to imagine the future while building youth leadership, cultivating innovative artistic methods and collaborations, and creating new approaches to dialogue across geographical, generational, disciplinary, ethnic, and racial divides. A theater-based retreat, young people collaborate with both traditional and non-traditional theater artists such as playwrights, directors, performance poets, visual artists and hip-hop artists.
