Intersection is NWT's biennial conference and festival examining new work practices by artists of color and showcasing multidisciplinary theater pieces on the cutting edge of new aesthetics. This year's theme, Creative UpRising(s) takes a global look at art and activism, emerging aesthetics, and the role of performance practices in cultural organizing.

Pre-conference, Friday, April 4
The Rise of an Arab-American Cultural Movement
Arab American artists, cultural leaders, organizers and allies explore the aesthetics, issues, and impact of the rise of an Arab American Cultural Movement. The pre-conference includes performances, panels, and a plenary on Artistic Resistance in the Age of Islamaphobia. Join this coming together of leaders of new Arab American theater groups, cultural centers, creative journals, musics, and more! Registration for the pre-conference also includes opening ceremony and performance.

including dinner, our first keynote speaker Ngugi wa Miiri, and Project 2050
performance.

Artist-led workshops, dialogues in response to creative work, and opportunities for artist-to-artist exchange.

Roger Bonair-Agard (poetry),Djola Branner (writing), Millicent Johnnie (dance), and Mildred Ruiz (voice)!
 
- OPEN STUDIO with renowned Chicana playwright Cherríe Moraga and director Dora Arreola, at work with the cast of The Hungry Woman an apocalyptic blending of Greek and Mexican myths in this re-telling of the Medea tale.


Baba Israel

- PANEL DISCUSSION: Hip Hop Histories & Resistance brings artists and scholars together, including Jeff Chang, Millicent Johnnie and Baba Israel, to explore Hip Hop's genesis, and its influence as a worldwide voice of resistance.

• FROM ACTIVIST ART TO CULTURAL ORGANIZING

Encouraging dialogue and continuing national conversations on models and frameworks of cultural work for progressive change.

- DIALOGUE. In collaboration with the Center for Civic Participation's Art & Democracy Project , this series of artist-activist dialogues provides an opportunity to connect to an on-going national conversation on Cultural Organizing - what it is, how it works, who's doing it, and how to get involved.   Also featuring Voices from the Battlefront of Cultural Equity , case studies on Creating with Refugee Communities, and artist report-backs from the Social Forums, local, national and global.

• YOUTH AESTHETICS, ACTION & LEADERSHIP
-Youth Speaks
San Francisco and New WORLD Theater's Project 2050 co-host a series of sessions for young artists, activists, educators and leaders, including a Youth Dialogue on Arts Activism in an Election Year, and a collaborative workshop with 2050 and Youth Speaks artists, to create a short performance that will be presented during the conference!

The Love in Revolution

New WORLD Theater's youth troupe, Project 2050, looks at global and personal revolutions in a high-energy hip-hop performance blending spoken word, breaking, stepping and video storytelling.

Saturday, April 5
2 pm Matinee, Bowker Auditorium
Community/One

A showcase of excerpts by activist/artists taking on important contemporary issues in a variety of aesthetics, from spoken word to interview theater. Host Kristina Wong introduces work excerpts by D'Lo ( Ramble-ations ), Lenelle Moïse ( Womb-Words, Thirsting ), Jerry Quickly ( Un-Embedded ) and Jose Torres Tama ( Cone of Uncertainty ).

This world premiere by the celebrated poet/activist Suheir Hammad explores stories of dislocation from Palestine to New Orleans, seeking compassionate connections between peoples with histories of displacement. A collaboration of solo performance and multimedia created with video artist Waleed Zaiter.
