Our Mission
Over three decades, New WORLD Theater has become a leader in multicultural arts, earning a national and international reputation as a visionary cultural institution dedicated to artists, audiences, and communities of color. Our mission is to nurture and present high-quality works by artists of color; to educate, enliven, and empower a diverse, broad-based audience; to reflect the realities, visions, and dreams of disparate communities; to communicate across geographic, generational, ethnic, and racial divides; and to foster a creative network of professional and community participants.

Our theater has become a rare intercultural meeting place in an area characterized by visible social divisions of class and race. We purposely exist at the intersection of art and politics, scholarship and activism, professional work and community life. In our work, we promote cultural equity and the vision of a "new world" - one that embraces diverse cultural backgrounds, multiple artistic disciplines, widespread geographical roots, and commitment to justice.

A resident program of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, NWT has redefined the role of the arts in higher learning, expanded partnerships between professional artists and communities, and extended the frontiers of performance aesthetics and socially involved theater. We have made arts-based grassroots organizing and creative collaborations with communities of color an integral part of our mission.
