PERFORMANCES
There will once again be two Thursday evening (7:30) performances for 2009! From the world's most famous concert stages to annual midsummer night appearances on the UMass campus, the line-up is spectacular.
Bowker Auditorium, Thursday, July 9: The Jazz in July Faculty All-Stars – a round-robin style concert featuring collaborations between the nationally and internationally known 2009 Jazz in July week one faculty (Jeff Holmes, piano, trumpet; Catherine Jensen-Hole, voice; Fred Tillis, saxophone; Chip Jackson, bass; Genevieve Rose, bass; Steve Johns, drums; Conor Meehan, drums; Andy Jaffe, piano; Bob Ferrier, guitar; Tiger Okoshi, trumpet; Bruce Diehl, saxophone, James Argiro, piano).
Bowker Auditorium, Thursday, July 16: The Jazz in July Faculty All-Stars featuring Hal Galper and Sheila Jordan – Musical collaborations between the nationally and internationally known 2009 Jazz in July week two faculty and featuring master jazz pianist Hal Galper!

Monday, July 6 - "Jazz in July Showcase: Personal Approaches To Improvisation" - It's an hour plus 15 minute jazz festival Jazz In July style featuring performances by: Andy Jaffe, piano; Conor Meehan, drums; Bruce Diehl, saxophone; Bob Ferrier , guitar; Catherine Jenson-Hole , vocals; Jeff Holmes , trumpet/piano; Tiger Okoshi, trumpet; Chip Jackson, bass; James Argiro, piano; Steve Johns, drums; Sheila Jordan, vocals; Genevieve Rose, bass; Billy Taylor, piano; and Frederick Tillis, saxophone.
Tuesday, July 7 - "Adventures with the Billy Taylor Trio" – Bassist Chip Jackson discusses his experiences as a 15 year member of the Billy Taylor Trio.
Wednesday, July 8 - "The Rhythm of Life” – Tiger Okoshi takes us on a retrospective of his life as a Japanese immigrant and rising trumpet soloist. He will also enlighten us to his rhythmic approach to improvisation.
Thursday, July 9 – “Music in the Digital Age” – Successful business C.E.O and jazz aficionado Jake Epstein discuss jazz in the digital age. Topics will include securing rights and publishing as a producer of material and as a consumer of material.
WEEK TWO
Monday, July 13 - "Playing the History of Jazz" - Through performance and demonstration, the Tillis-Holmes Duo ( Frederick Tillis, saxophone; Jeffrey Holmes, piano) will be tracing the history of jazz from its New Orleans origins to the modern day.
Tuesday, July 14 - "The Singer Meets the Rhythm Section" - Vocalist and jazz legend Sheila Jordan discusses the imports of dialogue and interaction when working with a trio. She will discuss ways of arranging songs and performing with a jazz trio.
Wednesday, July 15 - "Listening Logistics for Small Group Performance."-Topics piano virtuoso Hal Galper will discuss are "What To Listen For and What To Do With What You Hear," "The African Versus the Euro-centric Sensibility." “The Second Line March Beat & Syncopation," "How Rhythmic, Melodic and Harmonic Dialog Occurs During Group Performance,"
Thursday, July 16 – "The Hardbop Era" - Dr. Willie Hill, Saxophonist and Director of the UMass Fine Arts Center, gives a historical overview of the jazz hard-bop era. Dr. Hill will discuss musical conventions, major players and historical/ future significance of this era of jazz evolution.
A unique opportunity for jazz fans, students and teachers to connect with the music and musicians who teach and perform at Jazz in July each summer. Every lecture/performance/demonstration features one or more faculty artists expanding on his or her insights and approaches to topics within the broader scope of what is jazz.

The amazing sounds of jazz vocalists and instrumentalists filling the campus air with the flair of improvisation. You can purchase a drink at the cash bar and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.

One of the pillars of Jazz in July's curriculum is each week's final concert featuring participants who attend from around the world. Parents, family members, alumni, and other friends of Jazz in July return each summer to groove to the musicianship of our latest graduating class and tomorrow's top jazz talent.
