If the American artist had any responsiblity in the first place, the events of Sept. 11 did not change much.
The artist in any society has always been a social critic, historical commentator and wary of unchallenged, political power.
If the government of the United Staes moves to significantly impede civil liberties, freedom of association or the right to be critical of the same government even if it is locked in the throes of a protracted conflict, the American artist will then have more responsiblity to retract criticly and forcefully to the curtilment of individual liberties.
Of course some artists may believe it is now inappropriate to challenge most if not any initiative of the U.S. government and “rally around the flag.”
But artists become the conscience of a nation in times like this and beg for reflection and thoughtful consideration. The artist is often the first to small the mace of blind patriotism that can quickly degenerate into the black hole of gingoism.
It can be suggested that now the artist should instead of just thinking it, say it out loud. They will take the heat for it but will also remind the naton that dissenting voices are the measure of a healthy, democratic society. Well, almost.
