We had brought with us Suetonius' The Lives of the Twelve Ceasars from which we read aloud at night during our four days in Rome. My head filled with horrific images of torture of beasts and humans done for imperial entertainment. Then there was the blood-laced history of the church, its martyrs as wells as the victims of its Crusades and Inquisitions. On our last morning there I lay in that semi-conscious state that sometimes happens before waking; and I started to imagine the screams of all the suffering animals, gladiators, martyrs and heretics --all flowing through the ages into one truly deafening roar.
