The Tumultuous Fifties
A View from the New York Times Photo Archives
Saturday, September 13 - Sunday, October 26, 2003
Organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, the exhibition features 200 vintage photographic prints from the 1950s, a decade distinguished by significant transformations in the cultural landscape. Douglas Dreishpoon, Curator at the Albright-Knox, and Alan Trachtenberg, Professor of English and American Studies at Yale University, selected images that bring symbolic weight to their documentary subject: from McCarthyism, space travel, civil rights, and Cold War politics to post-Bebop music, Abstract Expressionism, and Beat poetry.

This exhibition, produced with the cooperation of the New York Times Photo Archives and Times History Productions, a division of the New York Times Company, is organized by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery with major funding from ABC Industries, Inc. and the New York State Council on the Arts.

As a related event to this exhibition, Michael Lasser, who is a lecturer, writer, broadcaster, critic, and teacher, will be presenting Ethel to Ella to Elvis: The Songs of the Tumultuous Fifties, a talk about the popular music that emerged from that decade. Mr. Lasser will illustrate his talk with representative selections from folk music, jazz, rock ‘n roll, Broadway musicals, etc.

Ethel to Ella to Elvis will be held in Bezanson Hall in the Music Department of the Fine Arts Center on Wednesday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and all are welcome to attend.
