Based on the writings of Edward Said, the work will include original and traditional instrumental and vocal music, spoken text translated between English and several Asian languages, projected visual imagery, and several cameo appearances by notable actors, musicians and martial artists. The ³pocket opera² piece will explore the themes of orientalism, the Westıs simultaneous romanticization and fear of Islam and Asia.

Caught Between Cultures - Exploring Multiple Identities
Thursday, October 23, 2003
Yuri Kochiyama Cultural Center - Worcester Dining Commons at 11:30
This workshop will use artistic expression to examine the problem of living between two cultures with a particular focus on Eastern and Western cultures. What are the mechanisms at play dictating particular ways of racial/cultural being? Is one obligated to live up to the expectations of one's cultural identity or is it a choice? And, what are the particular individual struggles as one attempts to perform cultural identity?
