“This play houses the echoes of souls who hauntingly cry out from the abyss and forms a bridge between the past and the present.”
--Julia Landau, the Cape Times, South Africa

Crossing the Water, Changing the Air is an interdisciplinary performance piece based on the experiences of the Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage. This twelve-month journey retraced the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade routes in 1998.

Askew writes, “This play came about because I felt a deep need to tell the pilgrimage story; the journey was auspicious, wonderful, traumatic. Twelve months is a long time to spend focusing on one thing; in this case, just walking the earth.”
