Graham Haynes presents Electric Church

Thursday, February 24, 2005
Bezanson Recital Hall   8:00 pm
The son of drum great Roy Haynes, cornetist Graham Haynes grew up around jazz musicians; his Hollis, Queens, neighborhood was also home to Roy Eldridge, Milt Jackson, and Jaki Byard. But, through association with genre-busting individuals like Steve Coleman, DJ Logic, Cheick Tidiane-Seck and Bill Laswell, the younger Haynes has extended the jazz tradition in new ways. In 1982, he began an association with saxophonist/theorist Steve Coleman, who along with Geri Allen, Cassandra Wilson, Greg Osby and others, pioneered a way of thinking about music called M-Base. His recordings for Muse, Antilles and Knitting Factory, range from collaborations with musicians from Senegal and India, to his use of techno rhythms, ambient textures and samples of Wagner operas. Electric Church features Haynes, Hardedge (turntables) and James Hurt (keyboards), with projected images designed by Nicole Jaquis .
