BUMP

Thursday, April 29, 2004
Bezanson Recital Hall 8pm
Students $7 / General $12
Bobby Previte, one of the few jazz drummers who are also composers of significance, brings his all-star quintet, Bump (Marty Ehrlich, reeds, Curtis Fowlkes, trombone, Wayne Horvitz, piano and Steve Swallow, bass) to UMass. "Mr. Previte's pieces are thoroughly, stubbornly, and distinctly his own...the music copies nothing," writes The New York Times.

Drummer Bobby Previte delivered a multi-instrument and multi-disciplinary workshop for all levels of student and professional musicians, artists, and the interested general public. The lecture (with question and answer period) touched on: possible goals and directions of a life in music, and of musical education; the different techniques needed to reach those goals; practicing regimens, the idea of practice being music and not a separate thing; the attaining of one's own "sound" and "voice" in music; the enjoyment of your own sound; the importance and use of the other disciplines (painting, writing, dance, film, architecture, even some sports) to the musician; the use and misuse of imitation; the seductive power of "beauty" and it's dangers; detachment as a strategy; the un-setting of one's mind; the stages of "hearing' in a continuing career—how to hear, how to listen; context and it's importance; the power of expectation; the surprising freedom in limitation; risk taking; true free thinking; John Cage, Stravinsky, Debussy, Miles Davis, William Faulkner, Led Zeppelin, Gregory Bateson, Balanchine, Mies van der Rohe, Brunelleschi's Dome, and Napoleon.
