 Jeanette Cole’s paintings bypass the cliches, stereotypes and limitation of language to convey elements of her experience growing up in the small village of Yanakwelle, in Liberia, West Africa. Images in the paintings which hover in a state of grace between abstraction and representation include strip cloth, fanners, green mambas, cola nuts, piasava sticks, and rice birds. These are some of the basic ingredients which sheltered and nourished Cole as a child and which sustain her now, as a painter.Cole is associate chair of the UMass Art Department and is the recipient of numerous awards including the George A. and Eliza Gardner-Howard Foundation fellowship and the Virginia Museum Professional Fellowship.
