These baseball paintings are part of a series of paintings Roger Patrick began in January 2002. They were meant as a tonic to relieve certain anxieties that he was feeling at the time. According to Patrick, the paintings refer to a time of innocence when we could find our heroes in places like ballparks.
In a recent interview, Patrick recalls a line from the movie, Field of Dreams, that expresses his intentions in regard to his baseball paintings:
‘[Baseball] reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again.’
That said, the paintings are also supposed to be fun and enjoyable for the viewer. They are playful in regard to their subject matter as well as in response to the translation of image into paint.
A recent MFA Graduate of the University of Minnesota, Roger Patrick is represented by Artforms Gallery, NY and First Street Gallery, WI.
