Charles "Teenie" Harris: Rhapsody in Black and White
Tuesday, April 1 - Saturday, April 12

Rhapsody in Black and White features the legacy of the noted photographer, Charles “Teenie” Harris, from Pittsburg, PA. Thirty-one framed photographs created from Mr. Harris' negatives are on loan from Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art through the Heinz Family Fund. Harris’ impressive, historically significant archive contains approximately 80,000 negatives documenting historic and daily events of the Pennsylvania city’s African American community between 1936 and 1975. It captures a profound sense of community life, family, hope, dignity and celebration, and is considered the largest and most complete portrait of African American urban life in existence. This exhibit is co-curated by Deborah Willis, New York University Professor of Photography and Imaging and an expert on African American photography, and the celebrated contemporary dancer-choreographer Ronald K. Brown.

Mr. Harris' photographs will also be featured during a dance performance by Ronald K. Brown and his company, Evidence on April 12, 8pm at the Fine Arts Center.

The exhibit organizer is the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Pittsburgh, a highly anticipated new center dedicated to the preservation, presentation and interpretation of the art, culture and history of African Americans in Western Pennsylvania and people of African descent throughout the world. The presentation of the exhibit is sponsored by the Alcoa Foundation and will travel to 15 locations in the United States in the 07-08 season.
