Welcome

Augusta Savage Gallery, located in New Africa House at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a multicultural and multiarts facility. Named in honor of renowned sculptor Augusta Savage, the Gallery was founded in 1970 by the Afro-American Studies Department. Its mission is to promote artistic works from a broad spectrum of cultures. Each exhibit is selected for its aesthetic integrity and its ability to enlighten the viewer on such issues as race, ethnicity, class, and cultural identity.

The Gallery is luminated with track lighting that extends around its perimeters. The Permanent Collection Augusta Savage Gallery has an excellent permanent collection of traditional folk art and contemporary works by nationally renowned artists. These works are available for traveling xhibitions to area corporations, schools, and other galleries. Educational Programs and Audience Development In an effort to extend multicultural education beyond the visual exhibition format, the Gallery also presents dance demonstrations, solo and duo music recitals, workshops, film, lectures, storytelling, and readings. Through hands-on participation and dialogues with the artists, audiences gain a deeper understanding of the artists' cultural experience. Specially invited audiences include students from local public schools and representatives of social service groups. The Gallery also provides University students with valuable learning experiences. These may take the form of internships in gallery management or the chance to hold their own exhibitions and performances.
