Alankara: Arts in India 2004 is a spring semester course with a cultural education study tour to India during the month of January. This is a unique learning experience for students, one that plays a crucial role in the introduction, appreciation, and understanding of Indian arts and culture. With a focus on performing and fine arts as well as on cultural, academic and social interactions with professional artists, teachers, scholars and community, this program provides an in-depth learning experience about India, the influence of multiple layering of cultures through its history and the diversity of its people.
The India cultural education study tour will cover several different Indian cities: Mumbai (Maharastra), Kochi and other cities (Kerala), Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur (Rajasthan), and the capital city Delhi and Agra (Uttar Pradesh). In each city, a variety of educational, cultural and entertainment activities will be enjoyed, such as museums, art galleries, historical monuments, concerts, crafts centers, etc..
* Two orientation sessions prior to departure for India.

* Participation in all organized activities and events.
During the semester (February-April), the study continues with class meetings, a required student oral presentation in February, and submission of a final essay to receive a grade.
Through intense and wide cultural exchange with people in the North and South regions, by sightseeing, eating regional cuisine, learning from many local instructors and listening to a variety of spoken languages, students will become enriched in multiple ways of knowing about India and its Arts.

1st 15 Days: South India --- Departure from New York City and arrival in Mumbai for a two-day scheduled tour of historic buildings, the Prince of Wales Art Museum, meeting with artists, and a visit to the Elephanta Island cave temple. Arrival at Kochi, Kerala begins a seven-day stay that allows visits to the Kalamandalam Dance Akademi in Cheruruthy, guided tours of museums, and several opportunities to enjoy Kathakali, Mohini Attam, and Puppet performances. A visit to Chinmaya College with student interactions is also planned, along with a trip to the Guruvayoor Temple and Elephant Yard, and a backwaters cruise from Alleppey to Kumarrakom. Arrival in Chennai starts off a three-day stay there for visits to the Dakshina Chitra Craft Center, the Mahabalipuram temple, and the Kanchipuram temple.
(NOTE: Non-student Course Registrant’s opting to RETURN to the United States at this juncture in the course schedule will have a round-trip Mumbai to New York City departure flight. Non-student Course Registrant’s
opting to JOIN only the South India portion of the Arts in India course
will have round-trip New York City to Delhi flights.]
2nd 15 Days: North India --- Departure from Chennai for Udaipur in mid-January (via Mumbai) initiates the North India portion of the scheduled Arts in India course travel itinerary. Commencing with a special tour of cities in the desert state of Rajasthan, four days are dedicated for visits Udaipur, the Ranakpur Temples, Jodhpur, and the Osian Camel Camp. Arrival at Jaipur for a three-day stay there will provide an opportunities to visit a carpet weaving cooperative, interact with students at local schools and colleges, see puppet performances, and tour many historic sites. During the last week of the Arts in India course, a two-day visit to Agra for views of the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort will lead to a full four-day stay in Delhi. While in Delhi, visits to Hindu and Islamic monuments are planned, as well as visits to craft and art museums and galleries (with lectures and performances). The month and course ends with a departure flight from Delhi back to New York City.

All students are welcome to apply. Enrollment in the course is limited to 15 students. Admission to the course is dependent on the student's high grade point average, three letters of recommendation from faculty and a completed application with a $100 deposit check made payable to the University of Massachusetts.
Program Fee: $3300 for University of Massachusetts students, $3600 for students of other Universities or Colleges
Program Fee Includes: International and domestic air, airport transfers, train and coach transportation, services of Travel agency official and a professional tour guide in each city, high rated hotels with 3 meals each day, entrance fees to select historical sites and lectures and classes by scholars and artists.
Does not include: Required Passport and Visa fees, Tips, Laundry service, Telephone, Email and Fax, prescribed books for readings, developing films, or any personal costs.
