Public Art

Together with the University Gallery, the Arts Council has played a major role in the initiation, installation and ongoing maintenance of campus public art sites. Since 1983, the Council commissioned a number of temporary and permanent public art pieces, five of which are still installed on the campus. Those who are familiar with the campus will recognize the Arts Council's five public art pieces: Hampden Court Sculpture Garden, the William Smith Clark Memorial Site, the Helen Curtis Cole Commemorative Garden, the Civility Mural and Fountain and the recently inaugurated Bartlett Hall Courtyard. Many of these sites integrate plants and other landscape elements, and allow the UMass community a pleasant environment in which to relax in between classes.
