Program/Service Notes:
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: Begun as a modest experiment in 1979, New WORLD Theater has become a regional arts leader, earning a national reputation as a visionary cultural institution. New WORLD Theater's central focus is theater work which traditionally has remained at the periphery; its primary mission is the presentation and production of works by playwrights of color. In residence at the Fine Arts Center of the University of Massachusetts, New WORLD Theater has redefined the role of the arts in higher learning. It has purposely blurred the lines between professional and community, art and politics, scholarship and activism. For nearly two decades it has created what has been described as "the new American audience," reflecting both on-stage and in the audience the realities, visions, and dreams of disparate and intersecting communities
