The Bureau of Communicable Disease Control (BCDC): strives to improve the quality of life of all Massachusetts residents through the elimination of communicable diseases. The Bureau is comprised of the Divisions of Tuberculosis Prevention and Control, Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention, Epidemiology and Immunization as well as the HIV/AIDS Surveillance and Refugee and Immigrant Health Programs. -The Bureau of Environmental Health Assessment (BEHA:) has a broad mission of protecting the public health from a variety of environmental exposures. The BEHA responds to environmental health concerns and provides communities with epidemiologic and toxicological health
assessments. The Bureau is comprised of five programs and houses a field office located at the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) on Cape Cod: Community Assessment, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Epidemiology, Emergency Response/Right-to-know, Environmental Health Education. -The Bureau Of Family and Community Health (BFCH) revolves around six major goals: reducing infant mortality and improving birth outcomes; improving health status and optimal development of children and youth; improving nutritional health for children and mothers; assuring Early Intervention and comprehensive systems of care for children with special health care needs; providing primary and preventative health services to all age groups; and improving health status and preventing chronic disabling conditions.
The activities of the Bureau are strongly oriented toward the prevention and amelioration of significant health problems, such as poor birth outcomes and treatable chronic conditions, with particular attention to the needs of low income families and cultural minorities. Activities are also targeted to those types of public health problems and services that are not otherwise available in the private sector or through insurance. Main Number: 617-624-6060
-The Bureau of Health Quality Management (BHQM): is the Department of Public Health program area responsible for health care regulation and service delivery. BHQM is responsible for: assuring a safe an wholesome food supply; controls abuse and diversion of pharmaceutical drugs; minimizes public exposure to pesticides; decreases illness through the enforcement of the State Sanitary Code.
-The Bureau of Hospitals: is organized as a system of four multi-specialty hospitals that provide acute and chronic hospital medical care to individuals for whom community facilities are not available or access to health care is restricted. Main Number: 617-634-5256.
-Bureau of Substance Abuse Services: works to ensure the delivery of the highest quality, culturally-competent, cost-effective array of alcohol and other drug prevention, treatment, and recovery services to individuals, families and communities in Massachusetts. Main Number: 800-327-5050
-The HIV/AIDS Bureau: assists in preventing the spread of the AIDS epidemic and the development of appropriate, cost - effective health and support services which will maintain patients in the least restrictive setting. In order to accomplish these goals, the Bureau is comprised of four programmatic units: Prevention and Education, HIV Counseling, Testing, and Client Services, HIV Health and Residential Services.
