Program/Service Notes:
Our mission is to provide a welcoming community where families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet can come for food and clothing, for companionship and relief from isolation, and to share their material resources, information, concerns and frustrations. We don't ask where they have been or why they don't get their act together, just whether they want their coffee black or white. It is assumed that if someone comes for help, they need it, and no one is turned away. An equally important function of the center is to help people move beyond a condition of need, to help them to help themselves and each other. Volunteering is encouraged as a means of giving to the center as well as receiving.
PROGRAMS:
-The Free Store: offers such items as clothing, housewares, blankets, toys, etc. For specialty items, such a furniture or computers, please speak with the Free Store Coordinator.
-The Kitchen: At 11am on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri, fresh foods, such a fruits, vegetables, breads and cakes are available to everyone. To help distribution run smoothly, we have a number system in place. Ask us about it when you visit. At noon on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri, we serve hot, nutritious meals. Everyone is welcome.
-The Food Pantry: offers non-perishable and frozen foods for individuals and families. This is the only program that requires proof of address and proof of income.
-Volunteers: The Amherst Survival Center would not survive without the continued support of hundreds of volunteers. We need volunteers who can cook, sort donations, clean, wash dishes, lift heavy things, drive, answer phones, enter computer data, fundraise, coordinate the front desk, fix and build things, etc. If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please speak with the volunteer coordinator.
-Case Manager available - Thursday 12-5 to work with homeless consumers
-Salvation Army Services - Tues 1-1:30 or by appointment - vouchers for basic needs, prescriptions, clothing, etc
