The Disability Law Center, Inc., is a private, non-profit public interest law firm providing free legal assistance and information to people with disabilities throughout Massachusetts.
-DLC works with policy makers to address legislative and administrative changes which benefit persons with disabilities.
-DLC operates a speakers bureau with experienced lawyers and paralegal speaking about their areas of expertise to community groups and other advocacy.
-DLC provides information, referral and advice and counsel regarding legal rights and services for people with disabilities.
-DLC produces publications on a variety of disability law issues. A list of these publications is available in several languages. WHO WE SERVE:
- Developmental Disabilities: DLC serves clients with developmental disabilities which are defined as chronic and severe impairments, which were evident prior to age 22, and which result in substantial limitations in 3 or more major life activities. Priority issues are investigations of abuse and neglect, denial of services or benefits, right to community placement, human rights violations, and discrimination.
-Discrimination and Accessibility: DLC represents clients with disabilities who have been discriminated against because of their disability. Priority issues include discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodation, child care facilities, and transportation.
-Special Education: DLC serves students with disabilities by providing legal representation in special education negotiations, hearings and in court. Priority issues are representation of children who are out of school, representation of children to obtain maximum inclusion opportunities and those whose current placement exposes them to a significant risk of harm.
-Assistive Technology: DLC provides legal representation to individuals who have been denied access to technology services. Priority issues include the denial of Medicaid-funded durable medical equipment, the denial of technology needed to ensure educational progress of children with disabilities by school systems, the failure of vocational rehabilitation agencies to provide technology, and the failure of employers to provide of modify equipment so that individuals with disabilities can perform successful jobs.
-Disability Benefits: DLC provides support and assistance to a statewide network of attorneys and paralegal who represent disabled people who have been denied SSI and SSDI benefits. DLC refers individual cases to this statewide network. DLC co-counsels selected cases with public interest and private attorneys in this network.
