Most initial inquiries for advice are handled by The Massachusetts Justice Project, which refers cases to WMLS which are in WMLS priorities. To avoid being transferred back and forth, client should call Mass. Justice Project 413-533-2660 to have a screening, after which they are referred to the appropriate legal service.
WMLS provides advocacy in the following areas:
-Public Benefits: termination, reduction, denials.
-Housing: evictions, subsidy terminations, problems with admission to public and subsidized housing.
-Employment: unemployment compensation denials, some wage and hour claims.
-Family Law: representing custodial parents in contested actions for divorce, paternity, custody, visitation, child support, child snatchings, quarterly pro-se or do-it-yourself divorce clinics.
-Domestic Violence: assistance to battered women's programs, assistance to victims of domestic violence with family, housing, and public benefit issues, as well as economic development.
-Elder Law: all services listed above, assistance in maintaining personal independence, information relating to Health Care Proxy and Durable Power of Attorney Documents, financial exploitation, abuse and neglect of elders; Declaration of Homestead Information, hospital free care issues and financial planning and advice for nursing home care.
We regret at this time we are unable to accept cases involving personal financial, personal injury, wills, trusts, workers compensation or problems with schools. However our priorities are changing. We will inform the community of new areas of practice as they occur.
