It is new early intervention, after-school initiative piloted in January of 1999, to serve up to 40 disadvantaged youth in Greater Holyoke. These youth are at high risk for substance abuse, gang and criminal involvement, HIV and other illnesses, and teen-pregnancy. Jump-Start is designed to reach these youth before their behaviors escalate.
NEARI is a private, non-profit 766 school serving 55 students in special education day and after-school settings. The agency provides educational and treatment services to emotionally disturbed adolescents. The agency also provides training workshops, seminars and consulting services to social service and special expertise programs for emotionally disturbed adolescents:
-sexual abuse victims
-those with a history of fire setting
-alcohol and drug involved youth whose primary diagnosis is emotional disturbance
-intervention/ physical and therapeutic holds.
Neary has 4 programs: the Day School, the Training Center, the Neari Press and the Jump-start Program.
