As a multicultural and educational support agency, the Office of ALANA Affairs exists to serve the needs of its targeted student population, namely, African, Latino/a, Asian/ Pacific Islander, and Native American students. By working closely with University departments, staff, faculty and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), the Office of ALANA Affairs demonstrates commitment to addressing issues of access, learning and campus life for ALANA students.
As a multicultural and educational support agency, the office has four objectives:
1. Addressing policy issues that affect ALANA students on the University of Massachusetts at Amherst campus.
The Office of ALANA Affairs works with students, faculty, administrators, and RSO officers concerning issues that affect the recruitment and retention of ALANA students at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
2. Assisting ALANA Registered Student Organizations in developing and implementing educational and social programming.
The Office of ALANA Affairs supports ALANA RSOs as they develop programs that promote awareness of the cultural, ethnic, racial, and social diversity of our campus community. The Office of ALANA Affairs assists RSOs with planning and finding funding for events.
3. Educating the campus about the concerns of ALANA communities.
The Office of ALANA Affairs works with various academic departments and faculty to develop courses that focus on social justice issues and the specific histories of ALANA populations. The Office of ALANA Affairs also sponsors educational programs, social events, and workshops.
4. Increasing campus ALANA educational resources.
The Office of ALANA Affairs is working with the University of Massachusetts administration and the Student Government Association to create an on-campus ALANA Educational Resource Center. This center will include a library and a reading room. The Office of ALANA Affairs is working to establish television programming --through the University housing system—that will promote learning outside the classroom.
