DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: The Western Massachusetts Division of the Office of the Attorney General is responsible for all legal matters arising in the four western counties, Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, and Berkshire. The Western Massachusetts Division has defensive and affirmative litigation responsibilities and, additionally, handles a large number of consumer-related complaints for area residents. The Western Massachusetts Division also takes part in a variety of community-oriented public safety, consumer, child and elder protection, and violence prevention programs. Main Issues: -Children: promote the safety, health, and welfare of children in homes, schools, and neighborhoods across Massachusetts. -Civil Rights for all citizens -Crime Prevention: Safe Neighboorhood Initiative is an effective coalition among community residents, state and local government offices, law enforcement agencies and human service organizations to solve a variety of community problems. -Elder Protection: work towards preventing exploitation and abuse in the first place by training police officers, protective services workers, community advocates and other professionals to work together to recognize, address and prevent cases of elder abuse. For questions about elder issues call the Elder Hotline: 617-727-0434. -Enviornmental Protection -Health Care: protect the rights of all consumers to access quality health care services -Worker's Rights: enforce laws regulating the payment of wages, child labor, workplace safety and the prevailing wage, and the payment and lawful use of the unemployment and workers compensation insurance systems. -Consumer Protection: Handles consumer complaints and provides mediation services to consumers who file a complaint.
