Program/Service Notes:
The federal Social Security Administration provides both Old Age Survivors and Disability Insurance (OASDI) and Supplemental Secutiry Income (SSI). OASDI: A federal program for the elderly, blind and disabled. Because OASDI is a form of insurance, only those who sufficiently paid into the sytem, or their dependents and survivors, are eligible for benefits. There are no income or asset limitations for OASDI. Participants recieve monthly benefit checks. Benefit amounts are based on the wage earner's level of earned income. OASDI includes: -retirement benefits -survivor's benefits and lump sum death benefits, -disability benefits Medicare is also available for those receiving OASDI benefits. SSI: SSI is a federally administered income maintenance program for the aged, blind and disabled. SSI is a needs based rather than an insurance program and does not require an employment history. People can get social security and SSI at the same time if eligible for both. Recipients of SSI should receive Medicaid as well. Participants receive monthly benefit checks based on household size, to provide a minimum income. SSI has an asset limit for eligibility.
