HLA provides legal representation to vulnerable people, particularly the chronically ill and the uninsured, who are seeking access to adequate health care services. HLA fills an important niche by providing free legal services to indigent clients and classes of plaintiffs in claims that raise issues of broad public interest. HLA also works with community coalitions to maintain and improve health services in the face of local hospital mergers and buy-outs. HLA provides Pro-bono (free)* legal services to individuals with incomes under 300% of the federal poverty level, and to groups of plaintiffs whose health access claims raise issues of broad public interest. HLA has represented individual consumers on such issues as: -Denial of payment for covered health benefits, such as bone marrow transplants for people with cancer, and mental health services. -Denial of coverage due to "pre-existing conditions" -Denial of home health care -Denial of "medically necessary" care -Loss of health insurance following a divorce or legal separation Priority Populations Served: Physically-Disabled Women Low-Income LGBT Nontraditional Families Immigrants Women of Color Accessible to Trans - bus/walking/train Accessible to disabled - Yes Children's Play Space - No Emergency Calls - No
