DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES:
The mission of Learning Support Services is to improve the retention and graduation rates of undergraduates by providing the learning support programs and self-development activities that give students the skills necessary for college success.
-Tutoring Program: The LSS Tutoring Center is open to all students of the University of Massachusetts, free of charge. Tutorial support is available on a walk-in basis for most first and second year courses and is provided to individuals or small groups. Tutoring sessions are comfortable, low-stress, and friendly arrangements. Students may drop by LSS anytime to inquire about tutor availability.
-Supplemental Instruction The Supplemental Instruction program applies only to those selected courses for which an instructor and the LSS have mutually agreed to support additional instruction.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are informal review seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. The sessions are directed by peer leaders who are proficient in the subject area and have been trained by certified trainers.
-Video Instructional Program: Learning Support Services has a video library of different classes offered on campus. The video library is free and open to all UMass students. The tapes may not be loaned for use outside the LSS. We offer 10 private carrels for students to view the tapes.
-Computer Labs: The LSS uses a variety of interactive and multi-media software to assist students in the mastery of subjects such as algebra, calculus, foreign languages (German, Spanish, Chinese etc.), writing, physics, and chemistry. These computers are located at individual carrels where students will have quiet, comfortable and private room. Students are encouraged to use the computers to supplement their course work.
