Program/Service Notes:
The National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) mission is to provide crisis intervention and referrals for youth and their families through national and local telephone switchboards, as well as advocacy and educational services on the problems of youth. -Crisis Intervention: NRS crisis line operates 24 hours. All call are anonymous and confidential. -Conference calls: At the youth's request, and when appropriate, the NRS will conference calls from the crisis line to a third party. When conferencing a parent or a legal guardian, the NRS serves as a mediator to help the youth and their parent to re-establish communication. If a youth needs assistance from a community-based organization or agency, the NRS will call to ensure availability of services. For youth suffering from abuse or neglect, the NRS can assist the youth in making a child abuse report no matter where they are in the US. -Message Service: The NRS message service allows runaways and their families to safely initiate communication. Messages from youth to parent or from parent to youth are recorded and delivered by NRS volunteers. -Referrals/Data Base: The NRS has a database with over 15,000 agencies and organizations from all over the US. Also the NRS hard copy library contains an additional 120,000 resources. Referrals can be made for counseling, housing, child protective services, substance abuse treatment, medical assistance, legal information and runaway shelters, and much more. -Home Free: With the help of Greyhound lines, Inc. the NRS helps reunite runaways with their families. To initiate a ticket, the runaway youth first calls NRS. the process includes a mediated conference call home to the runaway's paret\legal guardian and confirmation of a runaway report with local police.
