Program/Service Notes:
The participants in this program are those experiencing the label of developmental disabilities and those free of this label. The project is an opportunity for youth and adults, disabled and non-disabled, to make significant contributions to their community and to their own personal growth. Community companions become community "connectors", helping people to people, bridging gaps and opening doors to the community's resources in schools, recreation activities, group membership and the arts and culture. The projects creates ease and welcoming attitudes within the community so that all its members are supported and included in the wealth of resources available. It facilitates the development of lasting friendships between people of differing physical and cognitive abilities. It unites local businesses and groups who are dedicated to the reality of community integration by publishing and "inclusion directory" of local groups that welcome people labeled as developmentally disabled.
