Program/Service Notes:
DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: Vision Community Services, a division of the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, serves indiviudals who are legally blind or visually impaired. The agency's services include Community Volunteers who assist consumers with driving, assisting with support groups and recreation, shopping, reading, and clerical help. At times volunteers are assigned to those wanting vistors on a regular basis. Other services include two support groups in Springfield for those experiencing sight losses, and other groups in Northampton, Holyoke and Greenfield. We have a store, which sells adapted aids such as talking clocks and watches, Braille and large print watches, large print/Braille playing cards, and a talking indoor/outdoor thermometer. A catalog is available and orders may be placed by phone. Our Bell Atlantic program distributes specialized phone equipment to individuals with visual or other disabilities. A reorganized Low Vision Rehab Clinic opened recently. It is run in conjunction with Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary of Boston. We also have two staff that work with our Rehab and Strategies for Living Program, assessing the needs of visually impaired elders through home visits. We serve as an information/referral source for individuals in our community events in order to distribute informtion and educate the general public. Our telephone tape line lists items featured on the weekly flyers of area supermarkets, and upcoming events of interest to our population.
