Volunteer Opportunity - Educator Advocate Program
Are you interested in ending violence through education?
Become an Educator Advocate!
We are a group of peer educators dedicated to using education as a tool for change. We work to prevent sexual violence and relationship violence on campus and in the community.
By joining the Educator Advocate Program you will be fully trained and gain skills in communication, workshop facilitation, and event planning — skills that will last a lifetime and be useful in every profession.
Allies of all genders, sexual orientations, races, religions, abilities, ages, and income levels are encouraged to apply for our volunteer positions. Our continued goal is to build a staff that is fully representative of the community we serve.
What does an Educator/Advocate do?
We facilitate workshops, discussions, and events on topics such as: rape and sexual assault awareness, relationship violence awareness, helping a friend in an abusive relationship, building a healthy relationship, healthy sexual communication and more.
Our program offers educational programs at UMass, other local colleges, middle and high schools, community organization and businesses throughout Hampshire County.
What’s the training like?
Educator Advocates complete an intensive, 60+ hour training on sexual violence, relationship violence and related topics. Participants are also trained in the facilitation of educational workshops, events and other types of educational projects. Our training is sponsored by the Department of Public Health and results in state certification as a Rape Crisis Counselor.
We work to create an actively anti-racist community, and our volunteer training emphasizes anti-oppression work as a whole by examining the intersections of sexism, racism, classism, ableism, heterosexism and all other forms of oppression.
If you like the idea of doing violence prevention education but feel unsure about your background with this type of work, have no fear! We have volunteers with all levels of experience. Our training will give you the skills you need to be an effective educator as well as valuable information about sexual and relationship violence in our society.
