Center for Women and Community is located at the University of Massachusetts campus in Amherst. During the school year, it is advisable to park in the Campus Center Parking Garage off Commonwealth Avenue.

Directions to Center for Women and Community New Africa House

By Car to New Africa House from:

Points West (Northampton, Smith, etc)

• Start by driving east on Rt. 9 (towards Amherst).


• After passing the Hampshire Mall, you will take your next left onto Rt. 116.


• Take the exit for UMASS. At the end of the exit bear right onto Massachusetts Ave.


• At the third traffic light take a left onto N. Pleasant Street, and then a quick right onto Infirmary Way.


• Infirmary way becomes French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (just before Health Services).


• Follow the road around to the right and New Africa House will be the last brick building on the left.

Points South (Springfield, Hartford)

• Start by driving north on interstate 91.


• Take exit 19 for Amherst/Northampton.


• At the bottom of the exit take a right onto Bridge Street/Rt. 9 East.


• After you pass the Hampshire mall take your next left onto Rt. 116 North.


• Take the exit for University Of Massachusetts.


• At the end of the exit bear right onto Massachusetts Ave.


• At the third traffic light take a left onto North Pleasant Street and then a quick right onto Infirmary way.


• Infirmary way becomes French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary way (just before Health Services).


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

Points South-East (South Hadley, Mt. Holyoke)

• Take Rt. 116 North into the center of Amherst


• Stay on Rt. 116 (also N. Pleasant St. in Amherst)


• Take a left at traffic light next to Bertucci’s (North Pleasant St.)


• Go to 2nd traffic light and make a right (North Pleasant St.).


• Take a quick right onto Infirmary Way


• Infirmary Way becomes French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (just before Health Services)


• Follow the road around to the right


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

Points North (Greenfield, Brattleboro)

• Take Interstate 91 South and take Exit 25 in Deerfield.


• At the end of the ramp take left and follow the road to the intersection.


• Turn right at the light (Routes 5 & 10 South).


• Go 1 mile, and turn left at the light (Rt. 116 South).


• Follow for 8 miles to the UMass exit.


• Take a left off the ramp (Massachusetts Ave.)


• At the third light take a left onto North Pleasant St.


• Take a quick right onto Infirmary Way


• Infirmary way becomes French Hall Rd


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (Just before Health Services)


• Follow the road around to the right.


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

Points Northeast (Gill, Montague, Northfield)

• Take Rt. 63 South


• Go straight through the traffic light which will become North Pleasant St.


• Go through the next light and about ¾ up the road, just before North Pleasant St. intersects with Massachusetts Avenue, make a left onto Infirmary Way.


• Infirmary Way will become French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (Just before Health Services)


• Follow the road around to the right.


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

Points East (Boston, etc.) – Via Mass Pike

• Take Interstate 90/Mass Pike West


• Take Exit 4 (W. Springfield).


• Follow I-Interstate 91North to exit 19.


• From the exit ramp, turn right (Route 9).


• At light after the Stop and Shop take a left (University Dr.).


• At third light (flashing red) take a right (Massachusetts Ave).


• Follow Massachusetts Ave to first light, take a left (North Pleasant St.)


• Make your first right (Infirmary Way)


• Infirmary way becomes French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (Just before Health Services)


• Follow the road around to the right.


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

Points East (Boston, etc.) – Via Rt. 2

• Take Rt. 2 West


• Take Exit 16 (Belchertown/Amherst).


• Follow Route 202 for about 15 miles to blinking light at Routes 9 & 116 Amherst exit (Pelham).


• Turn right and follow for 7 miles to Amherst center.


• When you reach the center of town (Amherst College will be on your left), make a right (East Pleasant St.)


• Make a left at traffic light next to Bertucci’s (North Pleasant St)


• Go to 2nd traffic light and make a right (North Pleasant St.).


• Take your first right (Infirmary Way)


• Infirmary Way becomes French Hall Rd.


• Take your second right onto Infirmary Way (Just before Health Services)


• Follow the road around to the right.


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

On Foot from:

Parking Garage/Campus Center

• Exit the parking garage from the east side. The campus center (a tall white cement building) and the Student Union (a two-story brick building) will be in front of you.


• Walk along the sidewalk outside the Student Union Building heading towards the library.


• At the end of the Student Union Building take a left.


• Continue on this path past the pond until you approach North Pleasant Street.


• Cross North Pleasant Street and follow the paved path in-between the brick buildings in front of you.


• The Brick buldings are called Morill. Follow the path in between them up the stairs and continue on until you come to a side road called Stockbridge Rd.


• Cross Stockbridge Rd. and continue straight on this path past the Durfee Conservatory (a greenhouse).


• Once you reach Thatcher Rd Take a right


• Take the next road on your left which should be Infirmary way (near Health Services).


• Follow this road around to the right.


• New Africa House will be the last brick building on your left.

By Bus:

• Take the bus to the Haigis Mall/ Fine Arts Center


• Facing the Fine Arts Center turn right and walk up the hill.


• At the top of the hill, cross North Pleasant St. (the crosswalk will be a little to your right)


• Follow the concrete path in front of you along the side of the Studio Arts building.


• Continue on this path until you reach a four-way intersection. Cross the street onto Clark Hill Rd. Continue up the sidewalk.


• At the next crosswalk, cross the street to the left side of the street and continue on until you come to Infirmary Way (on your right).


• Take a right onto Infirmary Way.


• New Africa House will be the first brick building on your right.
