UMass Amherst participates in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Game Day Challengea national collegiate competition where colleges and universities implement recycling and compost programs to reduce waste at football games and tailgates.

The university has repeatedly placed in variety of challenge categories:

  • 2015 – 1st in greenhouse gas reduction per capita and 2nd in recycling per capita in the MAC (Mid-America Conference).
  • 2014 – 2nd nationally in recycling per capita and greenhouse gas emissions reduction in the MAC.
  • 2011 – Placed in top 7 in every category for excellence in organics reduction, recycling, greenhouse gas reduction, waste diversion, and low waste generation in NCAA Division I-FCS schools.

The EPA Game Day Challenge is student-led and supported by multiple departments including: Facilities and Campus ServicesUniversity Relations, the Eco-Rep ProgramStudent Government Association, the Office of Waste ManagementResidential Life and Athletics.

Directions:

From the North: Route 91 South to Exit 25 - At the end of the ramp turn left and follow the road to the intersection - turn right onto Routes 5 & 10 South - go 1 mile, then left onto 116 South, then eight miles to UMass exit - Left at the end of the ramp onto Massachusetts Avenue. Take a right at the first set of lights (usually blinking yellow) and proceed approximately one-quarter mile. The stadium entrance will be on your right.From the South: Route 91 North to Exit 19 (Northampton/Amherst) - Right onto Route 9 and go approximately five miles, just past the Amherst-Hadley town line. Take a left at the lights (just after the Stop and Shop on the left-hand side) onto University Drive. Go through one set of lights and the entrance to the stadium will be on your left.From the East: Mass Pike (Route 90) West to Exit 4 (West Springfield) onto Route 91 North to Exit 19 (Northampton/Amherst) - Right onto Route 9 and go approximately five miles, just past the Amherst-Hadley town line. Take a left at the lights (just after the Stop and Shop on the left-hand side) onto University Drive. Go through one set of lights and the entrance to the stadium will be on your left.From the West: Mass Pike (Route 90) East to Exit 4 (West Springfield) onto Route 91 North to Exit 19 (Northampton/Amherst) - Right onto Route 9 and go approximately five miles, just past the Amherst-Hadley town line.
