Workshop: 'Facilitating Discussions Using the Straight A's Model'

Inclusive classrooms require that faculty can effectively facilitate discussions about issues related to diversity and social justice. Yet, often, educators feel uncertain and unprepared about how to constructively engage these issues. When people have an approach and skills, they are often more willing and able to constructively address these topics.
In this workshop, participants will learn the “Straight A’s Model” for facilitating conversations on diversity issues and will briefly practice each component of the model. There will be opportunity for questions and discussion. While focused on classroom settings, participants will leave with practical skills they can utilize in a variety of contexts and share with others.
- Learn a process, the Straight A’s model, for facilitating discussions about diversity issues.
- Practice skills to effectively address diversity-related topics.
This event is part of the monthly Diversity Lunch Talks offered by The Institute for Teaching Excellence & Faculty Development (TEFD) through its Diversity & Inclusive Teaching Professional Development Series, with co-sponsorship from the Office of the Chancellor, the Department of Student Development, and the Graduate School Office of Professional Development.
Bio: Diane J. Goodman, Ed.D. has been working on diversity and social justice issues as an educator and activist for over 30 years. She speaks, trains, and consults nationally and internationally with a wide range of organizations, community groups, schools and universities. Diane has been a professor at several universities in the areas of education, psychology, social work, and women’s studies and has done faculty professional development workshops at numerous Universities. In addition, she was the Director of Human Relations Education and the Interim Affirmative Action Officer at the University of Rhode Island. Diane is the author of the book Promoting Diversity and Social Justice: Educating People from Privileged Groups, (2nd ed.) and co-editor and contributor to Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (3rd ed.) as well as other publications.
