The Finance Alumni Network welcomes special guest speaker Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande, president of Sparta Group LLC, a family investment office. Deshpande is best known for co-founding the Chelmsford, MA-based internet equipment manufacturer Sycamore Networks, the Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation at MIT and the Deshpande Foundation.
Deshpande will share his professional background and experiences in investment management.
Deshpande is involved as either the founder, founding investor or chairman of several companies including Cascade Communications, Sycamore Networks, Coral Networks, Tejas Networks, Cimaron, Webdialogs, Airvana, Sandstone Capital, A123 Systems and Curata. Deshpande lives in Boston and serves as a life member of the MIT Corporation. His generous donations have made possible MIT's Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation. Leveraging the experience gained at the MIT Center, the Deshpande Foundation has set up three other centers: the Deshpande Center for Social Entrepreneurship in India, the Merrimack Valley Social Entrepreneurship Sandbox in Lowell/Lawrence, Massachusetts and the Pond-Deshpande Center at the University of New Brunswick in Canada.
In July 2010, Deshpande was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Co-Chairmanship of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a group established to support the US President's innovation strategy.
Deshpande holds a bachelors of technology in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology -- Madras, an ME from the University of New Brunswick in Canada, and PhD in data communications from Queens University in Canada.
