Brought to Italy by a broker, Shun Li is sent from her textile factory job to work in a bar in Chioggia, a small island in the Veneto lagoon. Segre draws us into the friendship between Shun Li and a fisherman from former Yugoslavia nicknamed ‘the Poet,’ as the immigrants’ world comes into conflict with the local Italian community facing economic hardship. European Parliament’s 2012 LUX Cinema Prize for “films that illuminate debates on multilingualism and cultural diversity.”
