The Poggio Civitate Database Archive and Publication System
Since the mid 1990s, the excavators of Poggio Civitate, located near Siena, have sought to create a digital, web accessible archive of materials and documentation for this decades-long research project. After numerous difficulties, the first iteration of the site is now available to the public at http://poggiocivitate.classics.umass.edu.
When development of this data management system first began, programmers were forced to account for a catalogue system that had evolved and changed over the many years of work at the site. In many respects, this work was like unto an excavation in its own right. As the excavators’ understanding of the site grew deeper and more nuanced, changes in nomenclature, artifact typology, site coordinate systems, and data collection systems created a veritable stratigraphy of interpretive generations of research.
