Origin of State Name
The Duke of York, 1664, gave a patent to John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret to be called Nove Caesaria, or New Jersey, after England's Isle of Jersey.
State Insect
Honey Bee
The honey bee, Apis mellifera, is the state insect, having been so designated by Chapter 42 of the Laws of 1974. The Legislature enacted the bill, A-671, and Governor Brendan T. Byrne signed it on June 20, 1974.
