English Department Scholarships

Awards made on the basis of exceptional scholarship and financial need. Applicants should be English majors in their junior year with a GPA of 3.5 and above. Award amounts vary and are credited to a student's bill. Students may apply for these scholarships each Spring semester.

English Department Essay Contests

All entries must have originated in English Department courses during the Spring 2008, Fall 2008, or current (Spring 2009) semester, but essays may be revised. Contests are open to English majors and Pre-English majors only. Students may submit entries for these contests each Spring semester.

The Charles A. Peters Award
Awarded for the best essay on English literature written between 1558 and 1667; essay must be at least 2,500 words long.

The Sanderson Prize
Awarded for the best essay on any subject. There is no restriction or requirement for essay length.

The Steinbugler Prize
Awarded for the best essay on any subject by a woman English major. There is no restriction or requirement for essay length.
